Real estate chain Laing+Simmons gets thumbs up for culture

Sarah Stowe

Real estate chain Laing+Simmons is proud of its corporate culture, and has just scored the equivalent of 86 per cent in the Workability Index [TWI].

This index is a public, standardised, quantitative, and research-based measurement of 10 elements in workplace culture: risk culture, trust, engagement, future workforce, advocacy, community, wellbeing, leadership, organisational, and inclusion.

Laing+Simmons rolled it out to more than 300 of its team members from 45 offices, and with a total score of 862 out of 1,000 achieved well above the average rate of 643.

The real estate agency’s head of network growth, Travis Wentriro, said the results back up the company’s belief in its positive culture.

“We have consistently emphasised the Laing+Simmons culture as our point of difference, so it made sense for us to walk the talk and ensure our people-first focus was resonating.”

The goal is to make culture a measurable quality that differentiates the firm, he said.

“We know in welcoming new offices to the network, and new people to our teams, that culture is a major reason people want to join the Laing+Simmons family.

“Now we have an evidence-based tool to demonstrate its strength and the results are pleasing. Across all dimensions of culture measured by the Workability Index, we’ve outperformed the benchmark and proven our people and our offices are happy members of our family,”said Wentriro.

Roy Morgan research shows just 7 per cent of Australians rated real estate agents as ‘high’ on ethics and honesty.

TWI co-founder and CEO, Sunil Vohra, said “Laing+Simmons is already miles ahead of many large corporates I have observed over the years, wherein ‘culture’ was addressed in a superficial and subjective manner, compared to the standardised and vigorous treatment applied to financial results.

“By applying an independent assessment of culture, scored against a public index, companies like Laing+Simmons are leading their market in new ways to compete. They are publicly stating ‘we’ll prove our people will make the difference when you work with us over other real estate companies’.”
