How to survive & thrive in the food market- the not-so-secret ingredient

Sarah Stowe

Food is something we all produce or process in some way, even if your speciality is a microwaved noodle cup.

But once you attach the overheads to it, your hard earned savings and the 60 hour weeks you might need to put in, ‘food’ becomes a complex commodity, susceptible to the rise and fall of consumer spending.

With that in mind, when considering how to best invest your money into a food business, you should first consider this:

People are LAZY

Let’s think about everything happening in the consumer market at the moment. Online shopping, food delivered to our door step, the robot vacuum, and the all new ‘Hotpants’- for those really lazy people who think they can lose weight by simply wearing a pair of shorts.

Almost everything that is new to market is created to reduce effort and improve efficiency. And we love it. We LOVE watching that little robot disc twirling around for an hour over the same spot, getting caught under lounges and returning ‘home’ with little more than a fur ball in its dust bag. In the midst of our chaotic lives, spent working longer hours and commuting to-and fro, we are prepared to pay to save ourselves the effort.

People are IMPATIENT

Unless it’s the iphone6, we don’t like to wait. It’s the reason chefs get angry at customers who complain about their well-done steak taking too long and why single people sneer at the statement “good things come to those who wait”. We are accustomed to efficiency. Offer us anything less, and we won’t buy it.

People are always HUNGRY

Despite all our sophistication, intelligence and marvel technologies -we are still only human. The bottom line is; we need food to survive. But we also need the right fuels and nutrients to keep us fit, well, and able to perform at the level required by our demanding jobs.  People are quickly realising that you really are what you eat, and smart entrepreneurs are already bottling this up and selling it to us.

Healthy, Fast Food for Time Poor People

Of course not everyone is lazy, impatient and hungry- all of the time. But when we are, we usually turn to fast food establishments to service our most primal needs.

And when it comes to feeding time, health conscious people are on the look-out for new ways to eat fast and healthy. Sure, infamously unhealthy fast food chains have reacted by changing their menus to include ‘light’ options, but for the majority of consumers- this doesn’t cut it.

At SumoSalad, they understand that people want better options that are delicious and satisfying, but they won’t wait all day for it.

Their menu is packed full of healthy salads, wraps, sandwiches, pastas and more – available ready-made, or tossed on the spot in minutes to capture busy, on-the-go customers.
