Consumers cynical about healthy fast food, reveals poll

Healthy dishes on a fast food menu are not a serious attempt by the food business to provide a healthier menu. That’s the view of 71 percent of consumers surveyed in a recent poll and this result is not a surprise to pizza franchise boss Don Meij of Domino’s.

“People are still getting their heads around fast food players offering healthy options, who in the past have traditionally only offered a menu which hasn’t focused on health,” Meij said.

The Crosby/Textor poll of 800 people across Australia found only 24 percent of adults thought healthy alternatives on a fast food menu were a real attempt by the industry to promote healthier eating habits.

Mark Textor, joint managing director of Crosby/Textor, said “The results show that people are increasingly looking for proof that fast food corporations have changed.

“It takes much more these days to convince them that after decades of business as usual, fast food makers really have moved on to reflect community concerns about what we and are children are eating.”

Meij is keen to highlight the recent menu developments at Domino’s. The Good Choice Range is a permanent addition to the menu and includes the soon-to-launch prawn and spinach ciabatta pizza, he said.

“What’s important to note is we have noticed our customers’ changing eating habits and to stay at the top of our game we needed to move with the times and introduce tasty options with protein and lots of vegetables to give an overall better nutritionally balanced product,” Meij added.

Nutritional information on calories, total fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates, sodium and sugar are listed on each Good Choice Range product.
