Inside Franchise Business: OzSpy is driving business change with a new mobile modelOzSpy is shifting its business to embrace mobile franchises.

The retail store chain is undergoing the biggest shift in its business model since it began 20 years ago.

Challenging rents, a slow down in retail customers and a recognition that the business focus has altered are key drivers for the shift.

Franchisor Craig Mitchell told Inside Franchise Business, “We used to be a spy store with some CCTV, now we’re a CCTV store with some spy gadgets.”

CCTV installation provides the bulk of the income for OzSpy and Mitchell said it makes sense to realign the model into a work-from-home structure.

“Nowadays almost everything can be done in your driveway at home or the car park at work. If you want to buy a swimming pool, you get someone to come to you. You get the best advice when people are on site.”

The mobile model will have lower investment levels and ongoing costs than retail outlets.

Franchisees will be required to lease their own car which will be branded with a wraparound livery.

“We’ve had a fantastic response to our initial announcement,” said Mitchell.

Two high performing franchisees in the network have already opted to swap their retail business for a mobile, and will be up and running in February 2018.

“Some others will keep their stores and add a mobile business to reach the other side of their territory. It’s a bit of a blend,” said Mitchell.

OzSpy will retain key stores in capital cities.
