US fast food franchise Jersey Mike’s Subs is opening up shop in the Gold Coast today, but unlike many other American food chains landing in Australia, Mike’s Subs markets itself as a ‘healthier’ alternative. US chain Jersey Mike's Subs has arrived on Aussie shores. Image: Jersey Mike's

Offering a major point of difference through freshly made subs, wraps, and salads with premium meats, cheeses and bread baked in store, the first Aussie franchise is located in Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast.

According to a report by Inside Retail, a second Gold Coast store is set to open in Benowa Village, followed by a third in Browns Plains, Brisbane next month.

The Mermaid Waters outlet is the first international store for the franchising giant, which has had its sights set on expansion for over a year.

“We hope as we become successful and the Australian community gets involved with us as much as we get involved with them,” said Colin Kugler, vice president of national operations at Jersey Mike’s Subs Australia.

“We hope to expand all across Australia. The sky’s the limit.”

He also believes that Australia is a natural fit for the franchise.

“The culture out here we love, we just wanted to expand internationally and we feel Australia is the best place to be,” he said.

Kugler said Jersey Mike’s Subs will be closely monitoring how the first three stores fare in the Aussie market before revealing upcoming store locations.
