Superfood cafe revamps model, increases franchisee support

Queensland QSR and superfood franchise, Pineapple Express has successfully launched a network-wide revamp of its franchisee structure, increasing partner support and focusing on outlet profitability. 

The latest announcement coincides with recently unveiled plans to open a new location at Sunshine Plaza, the fourth in the developing brand’s network.

Leigh Metzeling, Pineapple Express franchisor said the decision to revert to a flat fee model over the previous percentage-based fee structure would relieve new business owner stress, suggesting more franchise brands should take the lead.

“The franchise world has been shaken up and with rising economic costs, there is very little opportunity for a franchisee to stay afloat, and if they do, be rewarded for their hard work,” Metzeling said.

“The team and I believe in supporting our franchisees and encouraging them to reach their goals and desired financial freedom.”

While the Queenslander acknowledged that a difficult 12 months for franchising, particularly in the Sunshine State had impacted on sector sentiment, interest in the brand has never been higher, receiving upwards of 50 new franchise enquires.

In order to nurture those leads and assist existing franchisees better compete in the difficult food and beverage sector, Metzeling said Pineapple Express had been working on implementing a series of franchisee-centric support programs, focusing first on a comprehensive technology overhaul.

“Supporting your franchisee is crucial to your business as they are the face of your brand and you need to nurture them in every aspect of the business,” Metzeling said.

“Pineapple Express is currently going through enormous changes in relation to the back end with technology and the introduction of new POS and systems which help manage inventory, purchasing and control wages. We will have a fully automated system within the upcoming three months, which will help franchisees and all stores reach maximum potential and percentage via technology and tight operational procedures.”

A diverse franchise model, Pineapple Express offers two options, a full-service caf_ model and a stand-alone kiosk, which Metzeling said has grown in popularity due to its low investment cost and overheads.

The latest structural update is helping bolster interest in Pineapple Express nation-wide, with Metzeling revealing that future expansion, while currently in the works, would be calculated.

“Pineapple Express plans to expand within Australia, and currently seeking franchisees in all territories – the team and I would like to grow organically and not exponentially,” Metzeling said.

“There is international talk later this year and we will further our expansion within the UAE market further.”
