Labor MP takes up mantle of state regulation for WA in new bill

Sarah Stowe

Just when you thought it was all quiet for Christmas, the push to change franchising laws in Western Australia has picked up again, with a Labor Opposition MP now introducing a franchising bill into the Upper House.

Last week Liberal MP Peter Abetz had his bill rejected in the Lower House. Now Labor small business spokesperson Ljiljanna Ravlich has introduced a similar bill.

The Franchise Council of Australia is among a number of organisations to oppose to any such bill, which introduces state regulation for the nationally regulated sector. Other groups to express concern include the Law Council of Australia, the WA Small Business Development Corporation and the International Franchise Association, based in the US.

The parliamentary process means the earliest this bill can reach the Lower House for consideration is February 2012.
