Iconic chicken franchise rules the roost in fast food health make-over

Sarah Stowe

Though the media would have you believe that healthy eating is a recent fad, the franchising industry knows this to be untrue.

There are dozens of franchises who have been leading the way in health and nutrition for many years, as is evidenced by the years they have been in market.

Back in 2011, before the trend kicked off, Australian Food News (AFN) reported that QSRH, owners of Red Rooster, had entered into an agreement to develop healthier food ingredients. Partnered with a biotechnology company, Red Rooster set out to develop a potato chip which absorbs less fat during frying, a low-sodium salt, and bread which when consumed, releases glucose from carbohydrates more gradually into the bloodstream.

They were the first Australian quick service restaurant chain to invest in food technology for the benefit of their customers health, which of course, gave them an easy competitive edge in the fast food market. Today, Red Rooster continue to invest in food research, with their contributions helping to change the face, and taste, of fast food throughout Australia. Other traditional fast food chains have made efforts to provide healthier meal alternatives, unfortunately (for some) the mere substitute of a burger bun for a wrap hasn’t fooled all consumers.

According to Ibis World, demand for traditional fast food has been affected by increased consumer awareness about the nutritional content of fast food and a conscious effort by consumers to choose healthier options. However despite a subdued revenue growth for traditional fast foods, businesses selling higher quality fast-food options have driven growth forecast for 2015, rising to $14.2 billion revenue; an increase of 2.7 per cent.

Healthy Convenience

What drives fast food, and always will, is convenience. The fact that consumers can now get fast food that is guilt-free and suitable for the entire family is a tried and true recipe for success.

Since 1972, Red Rooster has been serving delicious, home-style roast chickens that are not pumped with hormones, additives or fried. Some would argue that this in itself is the hero factor in the fast food industry.

But taking on more responsibility for customers health, Red Rooster have throughout the years made conscious efforts to improve their offerings; and none more so than this year as they collaborate with health food franchise Sumo Salad, launching a range of healthy sides such as the red pesto penne salad and zesty pumpkin couscous salad.

This is an exciting time for Red Rooster and franchise owners, as the brand reinforces itself as Australia’s only Roast chicken restaurant and drive-thru to get the tick of approval from every generation – parents and grandparents included.

Red Rooster has regional franchise opportunities available in a host of Australian towns and is quickly filling stores with a great bunch of owners who are driven, passionate and who love the Red Rooster brand.
