Inside Franchise Business: How Aussie is helping entrepreneurs with no prior experience build their futureWhen Aussie Home Loans’ Joel Cryer made the transition to mobile mortgage broker in 2015, he had no professional experience or industry training, but that didn’t stop him from chasing his dreams.

While the former high school educator had spent 15 years as a teacher, head of department and deputy principal with Education Queensland, it was his dedication to learning and professional development that made him an instant hit.

In his first year in the job, Cryer finished as Aussie’s second highest rookie broker for both loans settled and customers protected with mortgage protection insurance.

For his hard work, Cryer was nominated by the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) as a finalist in the industry’s 2016 and 2017 MFAA Excellence Awards in Queensland in the Newcomer category.

After a booming 12 months as a mobile broker, Cryer took up the mantle as franchise principal in the fast-growing Greater Springfield Region, establishing Aussie Springfield at Orion Springfield Central.

Since then, he has been able to help hundreds of customers to own their own home, thanks to his customer-centric approach.

“It is important to manage expectations and provide helpful tips and the most up to date information on the products available on our panel of lenders to ensure our customers get the right home loan for their income, needs and aspirations," he said.

While Joel’s success may seem one in a million, it’s not unusual for Aussie Home Loans mortgage brokers and franchisees to achieve rapid success in a short space of time.

For more than 25 years, Aussie has helped entrepreneurs get into business for themselves, providing an accessible pathway into a specialist profession, without the need for financial or mortgage experience.

The brand’s comprehensive training and support program enables interested partners like Joel to build their future with the backing of an industry-leading organisation.

Kicking off with a bespoke five-week Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking program, the Aussie training and development model allows entrepreneurs with no prior experience to get started as a self-employed mortgage broker.

Further professional development for new entrants also comes in the form of industry-recognised initiatives, such as Aussie’s accredited mentoring program, which is approved by the Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia and offers a blend of theoretical and real-life scenarios.

Aussie has proactively invested in developing its mortgage broking and franchise partners, providing a comprehensive support structure that encourages new entrants to leverage their previous experience, regardless of industry.

Joel said the skills that he learned in his former life had helped him to develop a personal understanding of the customer journey, which, coupled with the range of professional development activities and workshops provided by Aussie, made him a stronger business owner.

“I have found that the skills I gained in my years as a teacher have been very helpful to me in mortgage broking, as I guide my clients through what can sometimes be a daunting experience,” he said.

“I pride myself on being available to assist clients at every step of the journey, especially first home buyers, as arranging a loan and buying a property is often the most important financial decision they will ever make.”
