FCA supports WA payroll tax rebate

Sarah Stowe

The Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) has welcomed the move by the WA Government to announce a one-off payroll tax rebate of $128 million for 2012-13 in its State Budget.

FCA executive director Steve Wright said payroll tax was a regressive tax which discouraged investment and employment. Any move to reduce the tax, or increase the tax-free threshold, was welcome, he said.

“The FCA has pushed for State Governments to do what small businesses everywhere are having to do — exercise tight budgetary control,” Wright said. “Payroll tax takes across Australia have been creeping upwards. So it is good to see that the WA Government is recognising the difficulties being experienced by small businesses.

“The FCA urges other State Governments to do likewise, preferably with a permanent adjustment.”
