Franchise logistics business Fastway Couriers is getting airborne in New Zealand, testing drone parcel delivery in Auckland.

The collaboration with Flirtey, the world’s first commercial aerial delivery service, is an investment in innovation and technology that will come into play in a number of scenarios, said Richard Thame, CEO for Fastway Couriers Australia.

“In five to 10 years people will be doing business differently,” he said.

Thame predicts Australia’s remote regional areas could be the first to benefit from the technology. There is potential too for the drone to deliver in regions ravaged by flood and bushfires. And of course there’s the ever-increasing volume of traffic on the road.

“Although there’s no substitute for courier drivers, drone technology is rapidly progressing and may present future opportunities for increasing speed of delivery, particularly in traffic congested areas,” he said.

“Franchisees are intrigued and excited,” he added.

Taking to the skies, the drone transported auto parts on a 1.9 kilometre trip, bypassing factories and traffic congested roads below.
