Fastway Couriers helps in aid delivery

Regional franchisees in the Fastway Couriers network from Albury, Melbourne and Adelaide have come to the aid of teachers and midwives in East Timor and Indonesia.

The franchisees have donated time and resources to help transport vital medical and educational supplies from the Victorian capital to Dawin, in support of the humanitarian tall-ship Vega, a historic Norwegian freighter.

Sail Vega is an organisation specialising in delivering aid packages to isolated island communities in East Timor and Indonesia during the south east monsoon season.

Spokesperson and volunteer for Sail Vega, Alexis Marsh, said the donation from Fastway means 24 boxes of supplies can be safely delivered.

"When Fastway offered to sponsor the freight to Darwin, I was overwhelmed with their generosity. Their donation allows medical and educational supplies from Melbourne to be loaded onto yachts participating in the 2012 Darwin Dili Yacht rally organised by Sail Timor-Leste.

"The yachts have been generous enough to take these items to Vega in preparation for its humanitarian voyage," Marsh said.

"Teachers and midwives in some of East Timor and Indonesia's remotest villages will have access to basic equipment which will really make a difference in their community."

The Vega will sail for three months, visiting more than 12 ports and delivering two tonnes of supplies.
