Docklands is getting a new fresh food precinct, The Market

Sarah Stowe

To celebrate the official commencement of construction of Melbourne’s most anticipated food precinct, THE MARKET, AsheMorgan and The District Docklands team “cracked the concrete” of the Centre’s East Car Park on Tuesday 15 May, to pave the way for an internationally-inspired marketplace, boasting 25 specialty retailers.

THE MARKET will include a full-line 3,800sqm Woolworths supermarket, complimented by Dan Murphy’s, a large scale Asian Grocer and Priceline Pharmacy. Drawing inspiration from overseas market halls like the Chelsea Markets in New York, THE MARKET will attract Melburnian culture-lovers and foodies alike, providing an abundant culinary experience.

Melburnians will have the opportunity to visit a fresh food precinct that includes butchers, delis, bakers, coffee roasters and cafes, from mid-2019 when THE MARKET officially opens.

Designed in collaboration by NH Architecture and Esquisse, THE MARKET will feature Melbourne-centric design elements including raw and treated timbers and reclaimed woods and concrete rendering throughout, as well as visually stunning exposed bricks. Local artists and sculptors will be engaged once the build is further progressed to provide the new Precinct with a uniquely local cultural flavour.

Plus, the addition of a Medical Centre as well as health and beauty services in the existing Centre will complete the convenience offer, making The District Docklands a convenient destination for customer everyday needs.

THE MAKET will join the existing retail offering of The District Docklands including H&M, General Pants Co., Platypus Shoes, Skechers, Miniso, Ozmosis, Hype DC, Cotton On, Forever New, Bonds, Canterbury, Sunglass Hut, Politix, SportsPower and more, with new stores opening weekly. It will further compliment a well-established member-only warehouse; Costco, Docklands.

In the past 12 months, there have been significant changes in the precinct, including a new name, The District Docklands. The Centre has undergone an extensive makeover with a distinct focus on landscaping, setting a new benchmark for the greening of urban renewal projects.

In September this year, The District Docklands will launch an impressive entertainment and dining precinct. At the centrepiece will be a HOYTS Complex, the most technologically advanced cinema in the country, complimented by Archie Brothers Electric Circus amusement and bowling offer from the team at FunLab, Asian Hawker style food offering by 8Eight Street alongside a micro-brewery, Urban Alley Brewery.

The extended footprint is going to prove a welcome addition for Docklands’ growing resident population, office workers and tourists. The District Docklands is well on it’s way to becoming an integral part of Melbourne life and psyche. It will provide an urban oasis and a vibrant new village for Melbournians on the edge of the CBD.
