Aussie Farmers Direct tops fast franchise list twice in a row

Sarah Stowe

Aussie Farmers Direct once again heads up a list of franchise businesses experiencing swift growth in revenue, and becomes the first brand to keep the slot for a second year. Zambrero Fresh Mex Grill is leading the charge for strong outlet expansion over the last three years.

The BRW Fast Franchises list cites Aussie Farmers Direct’s average annual revenue growth at 157.45 percent for the past 36 months.

Braeden Lord, Aussie Farmers Direct CEO, said “Our extensive network of local franchisees is growing every day and they are the real heroes here. Their tenacity and dedication to the Aussie Farmers Direct philosophy of delivering 100 percent Australian, premium quality food from local farms to their community is what makes the company succeed.”

Retail homewares company Matchbox holds second place ranking; in third place is Chocolateria San Churro, Zambrero comes fourth, and Crust Gourmet Pizza Bars is listed fifth.

The same five brands appear in the list for top outlet growth, with a shift of position; from one to five: Zambrero, Matchbox, Chocolateria San Churro, Aussie Farmers Direct and Crust.

Stuart Cook, Zambrero CEO told Franchising “”It is an honour to receive this accolade, one that would not be possible without the tremendous help from the Zambrero team, its franchisees and loyal customers. We still have many goals to achieve and we look forward to achieving these over the coming years.”

Zambrero is just one of several systems to enter the list without a ranking from last year. Other brands were Life Resolutions, Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill, Success Tax Professionals, McGrath Estate Agents, Pie Face, Boost Juice Bars, Mrs Fields and Mr Rental Australia.

Glen Hickman, Mr Rental CEO, said “We’ve invested a lot of time and energy into the systems, especially IT and human resources, and redefined the business model to ensure our success.

“Most Mr Rental franchisees are currently experiencing growth in annual profit of almost 20 percent compared to the industry average of 12 percent.”

This year the Fast Franchises ranking numbers only 40 franchise systems compared to a previous list of 50. And the troubles of Souvlakihut and Villa & Hut, both in last year’s top 10, highlight that factors additional to fast growth contribute to long term success in the franchise sector.

Four systems have held a spot in the rankings for eight consecutive years: Gloria Jean’s Coffees, Nando’s Australia, Oporto and Poolwerx.

John O’Brien, Poolwerx CEO, said “Our dedicated focus on creating both short and long term plans for future growth has pushed the business higher each year and 2011 marks close to a decade of double digit growth for us.

“Being one of only four brands to be recognised eight years in a row is a fantastic achievement and one we are very proud of.”

Other long term regulars appearing for five or more years are Cold Rock Ice Creamery, Hairhouse Warehouse, Hydrodog, The Athlete’s Foot, The Coffee Club, Wild Cards & Gifts and Zarraffa’s Coffee.
