A life changing business

Sarah Stowe

It shouldn’t be this hard to get quality care”: how award-winning franchisee Jason turned his life around.

Jason Ballerini was a fit, active and adventurous teenager, living life to the full. Then a diving accident left him a quadriplegic and changed the course of his life forever.

Ballerini discovered the disability support services delivered in his area, particularly in-home care, offered limited choice. The care he received was delivered by a domestic cleaning company where the carers were not suitably trained or equipped to meet his needs.

He thought “it shouldn’t be this hard to get quality care”.

Ballerini wanted choice and control over his care and his life.  Not only had he lost the ability to walk, he felt his employment options and aspirations were severely limited too.

He wasn’t prepared to accept the status quo.

When he learned that a Just Better Care franchise was available in his area, he discovered an ideal solution for him was to purchase a community care franchise and deliver the services himself. This would not just deliver better care to others in his community, but allow him to use his social work qualifications, management and leadership skills in a proactive and profitable way.

“The values and the mission of the brand really resonated with me. I thought ‘these people get it, they get me.’ I wanted to be part of it and share the experience of better care with others like me,” explains Ballerini.

Today, his Wollongong business is thriving and was recently nominated as a finalist in the local business awards.

Ballerini’s imagination and initiative to purchase a franchise led him to turn his lemons into lemonade – transforming his passion and experience into a successful business that is respected and valued in his community.

His business and leaderships skills were recognised with the Outstanding Leadership Award at the 2016 Just Better Care Franchisee Annual Awards.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is rolling out across Australia, providing new consumer-led funding models for people like Ballerini who live with a disability. The NDIS embraces a whole-of-life approach designed to provide the right support according to each person’s needs and goals.

The Just Better Care business model is founded on the same principles, giving franchise owners a proven model and system to succeed within the new framework.

Ballerini is proud to put his name to his Just Better Care business in the Illawarra and Southern Highlands of NSW. He uses the services himself every day, so he knows first hand how to meet the client’s needs and expectations. Over the next three years as the NDIS rolls out, Ballerini’s goal is to have built one of the most recognised brand names for disability support in the Illawarra.

“I’ve always been lucky to have great family and friends to support me throughout my life. I’m passionate about this business, because I know how invaluable the right support can be. Without it I wouldn’t be the person I am and have the life I’m living,” says Ballerini.
