The Mexican food favourite is looking to revolutionise the drive-through. Inside Franchise Business: GYG is gearing up for virtual drive-through.

More than 20 percent of GYG’s orders now come through its mobile ordering app, but founder and managing director, Steven Marks said in a report by News Limited that he hoped one day that would be 100 percent.

“Eventually we will have counterless stores.”

GYG has been working with the Google’s Zoo team, described as a “creative think tank for brands and agencies”, to bring that vision to life.

“Right now we’re prototyping stuff and getting everything ready,” continued Marks.

“We’re reinventing drive-throughs, critically challenging every step of the process.”

While all of the drive-throughs opening this year will be traditional style, Marks said some of the new technology features would start to hit the app within three to six months.

“You’ll see some incredible aspects on our app,” he said.

The brand also confirmed it will open 38 new restaurants around Australia over the next 18 months, of which 24 will be drive-throughs.

Marks said, “Our customers have spoken and we’ve listened. We’re so pleased to be announcing 38 new locations around Australia. GYG is here to shake up fast food and we’re showing customers they don’t have to compromise on quality for the sake of convenience and speed.”

“We have some exciting plans for our drive-through restaurants and look forward to introducing these to our customers over the coming 12-18 months.

GYG’s new partnership with Caltex will also see the opening of four new pilot restaurants across Victoria and New South Wales — two with drive through facilities — and the potential for additional locations after the trial.

The new Caltex restaurants will provide a full GYG restaurant experience with the entire menu offering.

Marks added, “We pride ourselves on giving our guests the best experience possible, so we’re putting our own crew into each Caltex store to ensure our food and customer service is of the same high standard you’ve come to expect from GYG.”

The news comes as the brand was named the quick-service restaurant of the year at the The Roy Morgan Research Customer Satisfaction Awards.

“We’re not slowing down. From menu innovation and new product launches to using technology to deliver healthy Mexican food to even more Australians, 2017 is going to be a massive year for us so watch this space,” said Marks.
