First a part time employee, then a regional franchisee: Nieves Calvo

Sarah Stowe

Nieves Calvo has a passion for beauty. She initially started up her own mobile makeup business and went on to work at Get Threaded in Sydney’s Top Ryde on a part time basis.

She and business partner Eli King purchased their first Get Threaded franchise in 2013, and are Sydney CBD’s regional franchisees.

“I was a single mother of two working full time as an office Manager/PA for a large brokerage company. I did makeup on the side and I eventually studied and started my own mobile makeup business, which is when I was offered a part time job at the Get Threaded Top Ryde store,” says Nieves.

After working in the salon for one year, franchisor Liz See presented Nieves with the opportunity to open up her own business at the Metcentre in Sydney’s CBD.

“Seeing how the Top Ryde salon provided their services and the results that clients had, I knew that this was a great brand and it was all about making people feel good.

“After talking to the franchisor and doing my own research I felt that this was right for me. The support was amazing – all the information was provided and all the questions I had were answered. Head office was always honest and open about everything,” she explains.

Nieves praises See for her ongoing advice and support, and her ability to develop an organised franchise model.

“It’s all about positivity and success. They help you with your goals and they are always there to help and guide you every step of the way!”

As a trained makeup artist and former Get Threaded employee, Nieves bought a wealth of skills to her franchise.

“The brows, face shape, and being able to look at a person’s features and symmetry is very important to applying good makeup.

“This knowledge helped set up my skills in designing brows for my clients. My background in office management helped me with establishing the business and managing not only staff but all the admin that goes into the business,” she says.

The financial side of the business has proved the biggest challenge for Nieves. “You have to accommodate for all different scenarios that can occur when you start and be prepared. You have to take it day by day.”

Luckily, Get Threaded provides 100 percent support, she says. “They are with you every step of the way and they help you set goals and assist you in achieving them.”

Nieves and Eli hope to grow their network, and plan to open additional salons in the Sydney CBD. “We want everyone to have access to threading and all our other services. We love the Get Threaded brand.

“We are the industry leaders not only in threading but in customer service and commitment to our clients,” she adds.
