Eat more fruit and veg: Aussie Farmers Direct backs World Diabetes Day

Sarah Stowe

Food delivery franchise Aussie Farmers Direct is using World Diabetes Day (14 November) to encourage Australians to eat more of the green and healthy stuff to improve their health and prevent obesity, which is a major cause of Type 2 diabetes.

In a move to support the farming industry, the Aussie Farmers Foundation recently donated more than $45,000 to Diabetes Counselling Online, part of which was used to build ‘The Farmhouse’, on the counselling website. The Farmhouse allows overworked farming families with little opportunity to access healthcare facilities to log in to the website and reach counselling, diabetes education and support activities online.

So are you eating enough?

According to Diabetes Counselling Online, there are some essential fruit and veg options which will help maintain constant blood sugar levels.

  • Broccoli
  • Spinach and Asian greens
  • Orange sweet potato
  • Corn
  • Carrots
  • Tomatoes
  • Baby spinach
  • Apples and pears
  • Stone fruits such as peaches and nectarines
  • Citrus fruits such as oranges and mandarins

Check out the Diabetes Counselling website for more on The Farmhouse initiative.
