24 hours a day, 365 days a year – the business that works while you sleep

Sarah Stowe

There aren’t many businesses or jobs that allow you to earn 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Cafe franchises, most fast food outlets and retail stores, all have closing hours.
And it makes sense. For most businesses, staying open would mean they lose more money than they make, with the cost to remain open outweighing the demand.
So why do 24 hour gyms work?
Well, everyone is different but everyone needs to keep fit and with the increasingly busy lifestyles we lead, defining a best time to exercise isn’t a one-size fits all.
From nurses, police, and fire service employees, to hospitality workers, taxi drivers and students – the ‘normal’ operating structure of gyms has in the past been restrictive to many people. For others, like those who are self-conscious or those who hate working out during busy peak periods, the 24 hour gym model gives them options, too.
As a business model, this gives owners greater opportunity to earn around the clock, with consumers using the facilities out-of-hours when workers aren’t required and general overheads are low. Some franchise models, like Jetts Fitness, are built in such a way that franchise owners don’t need to be in the gym all day every day for it to run itself. This not only offers you increased operating hours for revenue making, but allows you to work the hours you choose and ultimately the lifestyle too. In fact, for many Jetts Franchisees the gym is a passive investment that allows them to make a positive difference in the world in only 10 hours a week.
Though the concept of an after-hours gym is not new, the accessibility of them is, thanks to franchises that have helped to propel and grow the concept within the fitness industry.
A report by IbisWorld describes the fitness industry as competitive.  As a result of such high competition it is predicted that franchises – not solo gym ventures- will keep the gym industry moving forward with an estimated 3.3% pa growth rate over the next five years.
Being interviewed by SmartCompany, IbisWorld Senior Analyst David Whytcross said that consumers have become “more price-conscious” and are focused much more on the practicality and functionality of gyms rather than the “bells and whistles” of other facilities.
