Pizza customers want value for money: survey

Sarah Stowe

Discounts and promotions are key to pizza purchases for Australian consumers according to a recent survey. About half of the respondents to the Canstar Blue survey never pay full price for pizza but use discount vouchers or only purchase on days when their favourite pizza outlet is running a promotion.

And more than 45 percent of respondents look for value by ordering more than they plan to eat so they have leftovers the next day.

Despite this cost-conscious focus, a gourmet pizza brand has scored highly for customer satisfaction: Pizza Capers [part of the Retail Food Group] has taken out the Most Satisfied Customers Award for Pizza for the third year running.

FIVE STAR RATINGS

Other five star rated pizza stores included fellow Retail Food Group owned pizza brand Crust, which scored five stars for delivery and variety, Eagle Boys with five stars for value for money, and Domino’s which received five stars for both its delivery and its deals..

Canstar Blue rates products and services based on customer satisfaction levels, and commissioned a survey of 2500 Australians for the pizza ratings. The results just released are from the 1450 individuals within that group who had purchased and eaten a pizza from a specialist chain pizza outlet in the last three months.

Canstar Blue spokesperson Rebecca Logan said Pizza Capers trumped competitors in the pizza store category awarded five stars by customers for taste, service, variety and overall satisfaction.

“Whether you are eating out or taking away, taste and service are big ticket items. If either of those is lacking then the result is disappointed customers. Pizza Capers has shown it is solid in both of these areas, scoring five stars for taste and service since we began rating pizza stores three years ago.

“Pizza Capers is not necessarily the cheapest pizza but it’s the best according to its customers, who, according to the survey, are the most satisfied pizza customers of all.”

OTHER FINDINGS

Forty percent stick to their favourite pizza flavouring and more women than men order the same pizza toppings every time (46 percent/ 34 percent).

Two in five of those surveyed found specialty pizza crust options – such as extra cheesy, or hotdog crust – to be particularly appealing.

Similarly, more than a third of respondents said they could get all the food groups on a single piece of pizza.
