New eats: how food franchises have changed it up

Sarah Stowe

A few franchises in the food space have made some changes to menu offerings.

The rise of health trends and awareness of a balance diet, as well as the need to for businesses to cater for an array of dietary requirements has resulted in a few franchised players changing it up.

Soul Origin goes nude

Healthy fast food brand Soul Origin has partnered with Australian dietitian and nutritionist Lyndi Cohen, also known as The Nude Nutritionist.

“As a dietitian, I don’t believe you have to miss out on the foods you love to be healthy. Eating well is about filling up on plenty of fresh, healthy food and eating mindfully,” she said.

Soul Origin General manager Chris Mavris welcomed the partnership.

“We’re looking forward to starting our partnership with some very exciting new products we are launching soon. Soul Origin shares Lyndi’s belief in the health benefits of fresh, nutritious, simple food and know that she will be extremely valuable in helping us communicate this message to our customers,” he said.

Just want to be free…range

Huxtaburger, and up-and-coming brand, unveiled free-range grilled chicken options to its menu.

According to a report by QSR Media, the chain has released three new burgers, which feature free-range grilled chicken, and will be available on the menu for customers from December 8.

Taking out the guilt

If you ever feel like you’ve blown your calorie limit eating out, this cafe franchise’s changes may benefit you.

According to Jamaica Blue’s ‘Healthy Eating Study”, conducted by Galaxy Research,

  • Women (61 percent) are more likely than men (48 percent) to feel guilty about the food they have eaten while dining out;
  • Younger Australians 18-34 years (68 percent) are more likely to experience post-meal regret, compared with those 35-49 years (57 percent) and those 50 years and older (44 percent).

So to combat this phenomenon of “guilty-eating”, Jamaica Blue introduced its Signature Harvest Collection nationally. Every recipe in the range has been developed in close consultation with Food & Nutrition Australia.

“The inspiration was to get back to basics, creating simple natural food which is big on flavour,” said Drew Eide, brand manager, in a report by QSR Media.

“All fresh ingredients are sourced locally to deliver real natural flavour, and prepared on-site in our caf_s, every day.”

The new Signature Harvest Collection menu includes:

  • Super Fruit Bowl
  • Vitality Bowl
  • Coconut Berry Smoothie
  • Enrichment Bowl
  • Ocean & Earth Salad
  • Zucchini Garden Salad
  • Seed & Nut Bar
  • Dark Chocolate & Fruit Bar
  • Blueberry Honey Spelt Bar

The Signature Harvest Collection is available nationally at all Jamaica Blue caf_s.

Vegan-friendly pizza

Crust Gourmet Pizza bar has launched its first vegan pizza; the Herb Crusted Al Funghi. Containing no meat or animal products and no dairy or egg products, the vegan option doesn’t compromise the product, which is sprinkled with BioCheese – a dairy-free alternative to mozzarella, made from coconut oil.

General Manager Renee North said the new option is a direct response to both customer requests and market trends.

“Recent research from Euromonitor revealed that Australia is the third fastest growing vegan market in the world after the United Arab Emirates and China, and according to Google Trends, Australians google the word vegan more than any other country in the world,” she said.

“It makes complete sense for us to capitalise on this trend and in true Crust style, to do it well, offering our customers a gourmet pizza made from quality ingredients that is truly vegan, without compromising on taste.”

All franchises in Australia are offering the vegan choices as a permanent menu item.
