Gloria Jean’s Coffees – spilling the beans

Sarah Stowe

As one of Australia’s leading coffee specialists, Gloria Jean’s Coffees has played a major role in the development and growth of Australia’s retail coffee market.

A multi award-winning franchise system, the Australian-owned and operated business has opened over 900 stores across 37 countries worldwide and is one of the world’s fastest growing franchises.

Since first entering the Australian market in 1996, the company has opened 489 coffee houses. Gloria Jean’s Coffees is now one of Australia’s largest and most recognised specialty coffee retailers, serving an estimated five million coffees each month.

So what is the winning business recipe that has attracted so many potential business owners?

For Gloria Jean’s Coffees, it’s a combination of effective business tools and methodologies refined over many years of operation, a quality product, a proven operating system, a focus on training and strong operational and marketing support.

In 2009, the franchise received the International Franchising Award at the MYOB Excellence in Franchising Awards and was ranked as one of the top 30 fastest growing franchises in Australia by BRW. It was also one of only seven franchises to be listed in BRW’s annual Fast Franchises list for six consecutive years.

A culture of joy and passion

It is passion and commitment that sets Gloria Jean’s Coffees apart from other businesses. Gloria Jean’s Coffees franchise partners are dedicated to creating the ultimate coffee experience for every guest. This underscores a devotion to handmade coffee – from hand-picking beans to hand-crafting each individual cup.

Gloria Jean’s Coffees purchases the world’s highest quality Arabica beans, which are then roasted at a state-of-the-art roasting facility in Sydney, producing exclusive blends that suit the different tastes and occasions of guests during the day. The coffee is then packed within hours of roasting to ensure freshness.

Coffee that cares

Gloria Jean’s Coffees vision is to be the most loved and respected coffee company in the world.

By establishing the With Heart Foundation in 2009, Gloria Jean’s Coffees serves its communities by giving back locally and across the globe, empowering people with opportunities to enrich their lives through financial and other forms of support.

Gloria Jean’s Coffees also works with not-for-profit organisation the Rainforest Alliance. Purchasing coffee from Rainforest Alliance certified farms means better incomes for farmers, investment in education, health and infrastructure, sustainably grown coffee and and protection for forests and wildlife.

In May 2008, Gloria Jean’s Coffees was recognised with the Rainforest Alliance Corporate Green Globe Award, the first Australian company to receive the award.

All Gloria Jean’s Coffees franchise partners receive five weeks of training in the art of making quality coffee and small business management through the company’s Franchise Partner Induction Program.
