Why I love my job
How long have you been in franchising?
Three years. I'm 36 years old and had a business as an auto electrician for 10 years before turning to franchising.
What made you choose franchising as a career option?
We were like a dying breed. I wanted to move to the next level and I thought franchising would be the way. At the start I wanted to get out of business on a one to one basis where the whole business relied on me, I had to do the work and motivate everyone. We opened up in Bendigo, then went further afield to Albury six months later when the opportunity arose. Now we have two more - Shepparton and Wodonga.
What is the greatest challenge in your business?
Motivating my managers. They are the faces people see and I need to make them feel a very important part of the business.
Why do you think you are successful?
I had knowledge of the product, my wife is a director, and she has 15 years franchise experience with KFC and her parents had run three franchises with more than 100 employees. It's a business match made in heaven! Listening to the customer is important to make sure we get it right first time. We're not perfect but it's about being professional. It's about getting customers comfortable with the Ultratune image so they come back to us three or four times a year.
What is your ultimate goal?
My ultimate goal is to build a very good reputation around the area so I have a multimillion dollar business to sell - it's an eight or 10 year plan, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon.
What has most surprised you about franchising?
I've been surprised by the level of support and systems provided. Ultratune knows how to get the customers through the door, about customer retention. We've had 10 per cent growth on last year. 14.01.2008
