What Scratch? Donates 2% of every Franchise Fee to Charity
What Scratch? founders Matt and Dale Burke had decided from their first franchise sale, in 2009, that they would donate 2% of every franchise fee to someone in need. The donations are given to non-profit organisations and charities, however only to those that are personally related to the founders, franchisees and staff.
“Cash flow is very tight in any start up business but no matter how tough things have been for us financially we have always donated to others that are in far greater need. I have had more than one recipient burst into tears and some wonderful heartfelt letters of thanks. Knowing how much of a difference this small gesture can make to someone who can be suffering enormously is very humbling,” says Dale Burke.
Even though the donations have not been significant amounts, all recipients have been grateful and overwhelmed. The donation What Scratch? has supported include a single mother needing a new washing machine, the wife of a shark attack victim, the mother of a five year old boy killed in a car crash, a father diagnosed with brain cancer and a little girl suffering from terrible disabilities due to an adverse reaction to the flu vaccine.
“Many of our franchisees have never had their own business before and we want to encourage them to become involved in their communities in an altruistic way because they will benefit not only as a business but personally. We feel this is a very important aspect of owning your own business and something that having previously been wage earners, maybe they haven’t thought about,” says Matt Burke.
What Scratch? believes this is a great initiative for franchisees to help someone they personally know or to give back to their local community.
