Dr Gang Chen. No Ordinary Cleaner.
After arriving in Australia from Shanghai ten years ago and gaining his PhD in Geophysics and petroleum exploration, Gang found employment chances hampered by his halting English and the oil industry downturn; the highly qualified Geophysicist became a cleaner, possibly Australia's most highly qualified commercial cleaner.
Gang literally started at the bottom with a bucket and mop as a cleaner with Melbourne based AMC Commercial Cleaning Company. Using his intellect and capacity for hard work he listened and learnt quickly and decided his future lay in cleaning not geophysics.
Encouraged by AMC founder Stephen Coade, three years ago (this month) Gang bought an AMC commercial and domestic cleaning franchise. For the first eighteen months Gang worked seven days a week, 10 hours a day. His franchise grew quickly to 24 sites employing over 20 people with revenues approaching $1 million.
Gang believes his success is due to following the AMC systems and training procedures, employing the right people, maintaining the consistency of service and always keeping an eye out for additional opportunities to give more service in the industrial plants, offices and pharmaceutical sectors in which he works.
"Cleaning is very professional these days. You can make a career out of it and a very good living, though I think my family would be happier using my PhD and drilling for oil!" he says.
These days "Dr" Gang takes on more of supervisory role and training others to build the business. None of his clients are aware of his geophysical background, but they are impressed with his attention to detail.
Parent company, AMC Commercial Cleaning services now has over 220 franchises in Australia and 1400 staff in China in commercial cleaning. It may be an area Gang will play more of a role in, in the future. 01.05.2008
