The relationship between happiness and fear
The Happiness Institute explains discusses the relationship between happiness and fear.
According to the positive psychology franchise, happiness and fear are tied together, in which fear is a normal human emotion that helps protect us from engaging in dangerous or inappropriate activities.
Fear often protects us from distress and buffers against stress and depression. However, when one overcomes their fear, it gives you a positive boost of emotions that would feel exhilarating.
Overcoming your fear increases confidence, self-efficacy and lead us to experience all manners of happiness. Even though the feeling of fear can be unpleasant, the Happiness Institute does not refer it as a ‘negative’ emotion as it more than often proves to be extremely useful.
As the Happiness Institute explains:
- We can grow from fear.
- We can learn from fear.
- We can become wiser from fear.
- We can enjoy happiness from fear.
These ideas also apply to many other ‘negative’ emotions such as anxiety, anger and frustration. Next time you feel a negative emotion, the Happiness Institute suggests asking yourself whether or not there might be an opportunity for happiness.
