The interesting history of the Curves franchise in the world of sports and fitness
by
Curves
Curves’ inception took place when Gary Heavin and his wife Diane started the outlet in the United States in 1992. They introduced the new, ‘30-minute fitness concept’ that combined strength training as well as sustained cardiovascular activity through effective and safe hydraulic resistance. This supportive and comfortable environment from the exercise franchise proved to be an immediately success.
While Gary recognized the need to help prevent health deterioration, Diane put her passion for exercise to use. Together, they realized that women all over the world would greatly benefit from the programmes designed at Curves. Soon, they began developing plans for franchising the concept and this plan took shape in 1995.
Curves had 1,000 locations in five years and over 9,000 locations on its 10th anniversary. Gary and Diane Heavin, today, are considered the innovators of an ‘express fitness phenomenon.’ Gary has written several books, including The New York Times and Curves. Diane launched diane, The Curves Magazine that is currently available in franchises. The high-fashion retail line from Curves called the Curvaceous, The Curves Collection was introduced in November 2005. 19.01.2008
