Business coaching specialists, The Better Business Group offer six simple rules to creating successful franchises and maintaining effective franchise systems.

1. Tackle one thing at a time.
2. For all uncompleted work, assess whether the work will ever get done and if so, when. Plan how tasks will be managed and work organised. It is productive to only keep three trays, one called ‘Doing’, one called ‘Done’ and a third called ‘Dump’.
3. Listen. No one has a monopoly on good ideas so it is useful to ask for suggestions and ask open ended questions.
4. Accept change as inevitable and time as absolute. Dispense with unnecessary tasks and people to ensure the franchise system keeps up to date with a rapidly changing environment.
5. Admit mistakes and resolve to learn from them. Nihichiro Katayama, the former chairman of Mitsubishi Electric believed that failures provide the lessons to ensure progress, and that they shorten the learning curve for those who follow. He suggested recording all mistakes and analysing the reasons for the mistakes. Vow never to repeat them and share experiences with others in the common pursuit of the goals of the business.
6. Be a friend to people and speak to them, not at them.
