Tasmania's first 'yes' Optus communications franchisees
Robert and Liz Elliot became Tasmania’s first 'yes' Optus communications franchisees in March last year, bringing increased choice for consumers who seek a telecommunications service provider.
Robert says the opportunity to pioneer the ‘yes’ Optus brand in Tasmania is an exciting prospect for the couple despite the hard work involved.
“Being the first allows you to break new ground and potentially be remembered as the persons who brought about significant change in a state that truly lacked choice for consumers & businesses when choosing a mobile & wireless service provider.”
After ten years developing corporate careers, Robert and Liz had looked at business opportunities for 12 months prior to happening upon the ‘yes’ Optus franchise opportunity.
Despite just moving to their dream home in Sydney, the couple seized on the opportunity to franchise with a highly recognised brand in a proven franchise system. Passionate about the products offered by the communications franchise and attracted by the respect and professionalism of the ‘yes’ Optus team, Robert and Liz moved their family to Tasmania.
Robert says they also knew they had the potential to be multi-site franchise owners in a relatively short period of time and that propelled them to make the move.
Three months after purchasing the first Optus communications franchise in Tasmania, the couple bought another and after just 11 months, manage three.
The biggest challenge facing the franchisees setting up shop in a brand new State territory has been educating the public.
“Every day the team are required to overcome customer objections on the Optus Network and the legacy perception of poor coverage – it will be a great milestone when coverage is no longer a question raised in our TAS stores,” Robert said.
The Tasmanian Premier recently endorsed the Optus network and the competition it will provide for Tasmanians. Coupled with the base station roll out, Optus is slowly gaining ground in Australia’s most southern state.
“Twelve months in as ‘yes’ Optus franchisees, we are excited about the future possibilities of the business and we are as passionate about the business today as we were in March 2010,” Robert said.
