Relevant and meaningful Franchise training
Beyond these key areas that endeavour to support the Franchise, there are individual skills that Franchisees must have, or be prepared to gain, to ensure the success of their business. These are skills such as time management, financial management, and soft-skills, such as communication and negotiation. These skills are critical components of business operations, and can often mean the difference between success and failure of an SME.
Professional development programs are designed to keep learners’ up-to-date with industry changes and standards. In addition, they act to bridge the gap between an individual’s current skill level and the skills required to perform particular tasks or functions. By undertaking a skills assessment, individuals can gauge the type and level of training required. This can be through self-assessment, via industry associations, or by a formal training needs analysis.
As a quick example of self-assessing current skills, below are some common accounting course topics, extracted from basic training programs. Gaps are indentified by answering yes or no to the following questions:
- Can you prepare simple financial reports?
- Do you know what your current expenses, bad and doubtful debts are?
- Can you use spreadsheets?
- Do you know how to use data tables?
- Can you work with simple spreadsheet formulas?
- Can you use computerised accounting software (if so, do you use it well)?
- Can you prepare a Business Activities Statement?
