Optus provides new digital apps and Wi-Fi at Australian Open 2012
In conjunction with Tennis Australia, Optus has provided free internet connectivity for the first time to wi-fi users across the entire Australian Open site at the Melbourne Park. This has provided thousands of tennis fans internet access throughout the tournament.
Customers on any network were given access to the latest news, connection with friends, applications and online services, at no cost, throughout the two-week tennis event in January 2012.
“At this year’s Australian Open, we are dedicated to delivering seamless connectivity and innovation to tennis fans for the duration of the tournament,” said Jann Kohlman, Group Manager of Optus Sponsorship and Community Programs.
“As the exclusive telecommunications partner for the eighth year running, free Wi-Fi on the ground, dedicated digital applications and live streaming will allow people around Australia to embrace all that Australia’s most high profile sporting event has to offer.”
In the past 12 to 18 months, Optus has invested $3 million in Network infrastructure to boost network capacity in areas surrounding the Melbourne Park precinct.
In addition to the free wi-fi and exclusive live streaming, Optus had also enhanced the popular Go Places app, which delivered a dedicated Melbourne restaurant guide with specific details.
A new widget was also developed to provide customers with great deals, reviews and ratings of nearby Melbourne restaurants to ensure an enjoyable dining experience to round off a day at the tennis.
Optus has been the official Telecommunications Partner for the Australian Open for the eighth consecutive year. In 2011, many Optus customers took advantage of the Australian Open mobile streaming service, spending on average 6.50 minutes during each visit.
