Mr Whippy – Tremendous expansion of the fast food business
The Mr Whippy franchise distributes ice cream and related products through a network of retail outlets. The fast food business had incorporated Mr Whippy Pty Limited in December 1962. The take away business started trading as a retailer of ice cream products. Mr Whippy sold its products from its fleet of vans in the suburban areas of Sydney.
Over the years, Mr Whippy has expanded its business throughout Australia. In 1966 Mr Whippy Holdings was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1966 and Forte Plc holds the controlling interest in Mr Whippy. With a view to enter into the retail business, Mr Whippy sold its fleet of vans to independent operators.
By the middle of 1980, the fast food business had been operating 50 ice cream parlours in New South Wales and Queensland, besides its own manufacturing facilities. In 1992, Mr Whippy was de-listed from the Australian Stock Exchange and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Forte Plc, which was finally bought by Bonlac Foods Limited in December 1993. In 2000, international and Melbourne based businessman, Mr Stan Gordon bought the entire business interests, assets, trademarks and goodwill of Mr Whippy.
