History of the IGA franchise’s retail network
The IGA franchise was established in America in 1926 as the Independent Grocers Alliance. The retail franchise represented an alliance between wholesalers, retailers and manufacturers and is the primary means by which the three parties strengthen their relationships. Now, the supermarket franchise has become the largest voluntary supermarket network with sales of more than $22 billion (Euro Dollars) annually and over 4,000 independent stores in 41 different countries.
The IGA franchise was introduced in Australia in 1988 by Davids Holdings when ten stores officially became members of the IGA. The retail franchise has moved from strength to strength since then and currently operates over 1000 IGA stores all over Australia. Davids Holdings has changed its name to Metcash Trading Limited in those years and its distribution branch has been rebranded as IGA Distribution. In Australia, the IGA has come to stand for ’Independent Grocers of Australia’.
The long standing IGA logo represents a standard of consistency of operation in the industry to the distributors and more importantly to customers. So despite the various differences found in the three channels and the sizes of stores or outlets, customers can be assured that by shopping at IGA they are supporting and enabling local Australian businesses to grow. 17.11.2007Contact IGA
