Happiness is moving towards the positive
The Happiness Institute discusses on how moving towards the positive is more motivating than avoiding the negative. This simple concept can be very powerful and could even be life changing.
According to the positive psychology franchise, too many people set “negative” or “avoidance” goals. They try to get away from something they don’t like, which might make sense but it ultimately becomes negative and less than inspiring.
An alternative approach is to set goals that are more positively framed and attractive, which makes them more motivating and energising.
The Happiness Institute lists some examples in turning your goals from the negative to the positive.
- Lose weight to gain health and wellbeing
- Be less depressed to be happier and more positive
- Stop smoking to exercising more
- Avoid negative people to surrounding yourself with positive people
As explained by The Happiness Institute semantics - what we say to ourselves and the words we use when we talk to ourselves – is very important in shaping our goals and ultimately, our happiness. The Happiness Institute recommends using positive language in everything we do.
