Excellence in Franchising Awards
Closing the National Franchising and Small Business Convention (NFC07), the night was truly representative of this country's 'best of the best'. Four months on, The Franchise Review asked several winners to reflect on the big night and the experience of taking out one of the prestigious awards.
John Brennan Hair
For us at John Brennan Hair , winning the Franchise Innovation Award 2007 has allowed us to grow and develop our business in many ways. This accolade was awarded to John Brennan for the development of our systemised operations and training program.
The credit and recognition gained from winning the award really helped to strengthen the acceptance, implementation and success of the program. Firstly, the JBH Essential Hair Education program incorporates an internal education journey which delivers skills and practical experiences every step of the way in a hairdressing career. It starts with a 16 year old first year apprentice and moves them through to hairdresser, manager and then to franchisee.
The essential education program delivers a more comprehensive and thorough learning platform. The internal training units allow progressive learning and each student can progress to certificate III standard at their own pace. TAFE, has supported the system throughout the country, allowing our franchisees to get more productivity from our apprentices by reducing the days they spend away from the salon training. TAFE has now worked with us to help roll-out a pilot program to deliver this style of education to other salons who fit the criteria. This is an industry first and our chance to give something back to the industry.
Since the development of our essential education program we have see an instant increase in productivity, staff morale and confidence. We see young hairdressers previously content to turn up to work, now become more engaged in the business. These young employees now look for the next level of training in order to help them move through the organisation quicker. This system helps them see a future that they are excited about.
The essential education training has also enabled us to become the employer of choice, mainly due to the career possibilities now available at John Brennan Hair. This has helped us to retain our staff in an otherwise fickle industry. This guarantees a more stable workforce that is committed to the brand and the business. Staff retention not only benefits our franchisees but also our clients, as our clients get a better constant level of service from a happier team. 28.03.2008
