DYI Dos and Don’ts from Hire a Tradesman
Hire a Tradesman ’s Managing Director, Rob Harris, shares his tradesman expertise and knowledge on the DYI Dos and Don’ts, which can help avoid potential disasters.
These DYI disasters, as Rob Harris explains, can include irreparable paint spills, lost hinge screws and cabinet doors that don’t close. Bigger disasters can involve broken gas pipes, burst water pipes, unstable and dangerous brickwork or toxic chemical leaks.
Usually these problems occur from attempting a DYI project without proper preparation, training or advice. Some home improvement programs might look simple, but some of these jobs are always best left to the professionals.
Before starting a DYI project, Rob Harris recommends asking a series of important questions:
- Do I need a permit to make my proposed alterations?
- Do I have all the right equipment to complete the job well?
- Will my work affect the neighbours?
- Do I have the correct tools for the job
- Is the wall I want to knock through load bearing?
- Do I know where the wiring/ pipes are located?
- Are the products or materials I want to use dangerous to my health, to my children’s or pet’s health or to the environment?
- Do I need a trade qualification to do this work?
- Do I carry the appropriate insurance for my home and for me personally should something go wrong?
- Does the final product comply with Australian standards?
