Mike Ramsay Director - Charter Security
Most small business or franchise owners understand the importance of Occupational Health and Safety compliance. Most OH&S training programs cover safety procedures for manual labour, ergonomics, fire drills, emergency exits, first aid and chemical spills and storage.

But what about protecting staff in the event of a robbery or assault?

In Australia, each State and Territory has workplace health and safety legislation imposing obligations on employers to ensure the personal well-being of employees. This includes a requirement to prevent employee assault, robbery and trauma as much as possible. However, security awareness training is often the most neglected of all occupational health and safety measures.

Quite simply, employers who do not employ security awareness training as part of their occupational health and safety policy and procedure are leaving themselves open to litigation.

In many small businesses employees make the assumption that security is the responsibility of others. If there is an incident of shop stealing or other more threatening security breaches (such as armed hold-ups), many employees believe someone else will know what to do. This mentality increases the risk of staff suffering from the physical and emotional trauma often resulting from security breaches.

Appropriate employee security awareness training programs ensure staff are not placed in positions which compromise their safety. Providing training for employees to heighten their awareness of risk and security issues increases morale and nurtures a sense of pride at work. This specialised training makes staff aware of the risks they could face in their job, the potential for danger and the need to be adequately prepared.

Depending on the size and style of the business, independent security specialists can design and deliver a practical education program for employees.

Charter Security takes into account changing staff situations and recommends planning an ongoing security awareness education program.

A range of training is available to employees. The areas covered include:
- Operating procedures and facilities;
- Use and maintenance of security equipment and devices;
- Being alert to people entering the workplace and to the behaviour of people within the workplace;
- How to identify offenders;
- How to identify suspicious behaviour;
- What to do during and after a robbery or assault; and
- Post incident trauma and the arrangements for post incident support.
