Zarraffa’s Coffee specialises in freshly roasted coffee. At the core of the business is Zarraffa’s Coffee commitment to quality and freshness that has seen the company grow from strength to strength. The business is founded on the mantra to create ‘An individually perfect cup of coffee - every time’ which encapsulates Zarraffa’s mission and customers’ expectation. Great service is our practice and fresh, quality coffee our business.
From its’ humble beginnings as a roasting house operating in the back streets of Southport, Gold Coast, the founder, Kenton Campbell quickly established and confirmed the position of Zarraffa’s Coffee as a viable standalone entity with the opening of its first main-stream retail outlet in Australia Fair in 1997, and consolidated via a doubling in size of those premises within the ensuing twelve months.
Since the opening of the first store, the Zarraffa’s Coffee experience has become something of an icon to many Gold Coasters and moreover many Queenslanders residing in the South-eastern corner.
The business has maintained a steady pattern of growth, as is evident both in gross turnover figures and a consistent increase in profile. This has been demand driven, and is despite efforts to maintain conservative levels of expansion, consistent with the initial desire to satisfy the needs of a somewhat exclusive minority market.
The opening of premises within the Harbour Town centre (mid 1999) which incorporated Head Office, and production facilities and a second Australia Fair outlet (mid 2001) was evidence at the time that the business was a hit.
Zarraffa’s Coffee currently has 40 stores across South East Queensland, with plans to open further stores leading into 2010 and beyond.
Benefits and Opportunities Operating in the specialty and takeaway coffee industry Zarraffa's Coffee has maintained it’s clear goal to ensure that quality, consistency and freshness are guaranteed.
Achieving and maintaining this goal is critical to the success of the business. Just like the Masai Giraffe that is proudly positioned in the centre of the Zarraffa’s Coffee logo, Zarraffa’s Coffee aspires to stand ‘head and shoulders above the rest’. This desire is at the forefront of the business and combined with the company values and drives the business.
Testament to this statement is Zarraffa’s Coffees swag of awards, ranging from the Equal Golden Bean Roaster Awards in which the company has placed in 2006, 2007 and 2008 to those achievements which recognise the business for it’s growth, commitment to excellence and financial results.
Other awards include ranking in the top 25 Business Review Weekly’s Fast Franchises in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Along with the company’s most celebrated award of winning the Gold Coast Business Excellence Award of Gold Coast Business of the Year two year’s running in 2007 and 2008. Since 2007, Zarraffa’s Coffee has won the Retail, Wholesale and Distribution category at the annual Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards.
Whilst the business has achieved recognition, so has the company’s founder, Kenton Campbell, who topped off an amazing 2008 with winning the title of the Gold Coast’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
As you can see on the following page, Zarraffa’s Coffee really does stand ‘Head and Shoulders above the rest’ and will continue to aim high when it comes to business practices, achievements and financials.
Testimonials ZARRAFFA’S COFFEE AUSTRALIA FAIR STORE AND KIOSK David and Lynn Fulcher
First becoming aware of the Zarraffa’s Coffee brand after speaking to founder Kenton Campbell, who was serving them at the Australia Fair store, David and Lynn Fulcher have been with Zarraffa’s Coffee for almost 5 years. Kenton’s passion for the brand and product had them captivated instantly. ‘Watching as the first franchise opened’ and ‘Being converted to the best coffee...Ever tasted’ were steps that followed and encouraged the pair to get in on the action and open a franchise.
In December 2004 David and Lynn opened the Logan Hyperdome store. Making sure they approached the venture with ‘due diligence’ toward finances and planning were actions the pair found necessary in making the initial franchising process smooth and successful. The back of house support from Management staff and consistency in the company’s procedural processes and brand identity over the subsequent years saw the pair jump at the chance to purchase the original Zarraffa’s Coffee store in Australia Fair in 2005. A year later the couple purchased a second franchise in the same centre, becoming the company’s very first and successful multiple store owners. In 2005, the Fulcher’s took out the title of Franchisee of the Year, reward for their commitment and passion to the brand and business.
Now after having witnessed and been a part of the company’s exponential growth, David and Lynn can provide some important advice to achieving to success in not only franchising but also in business. ‘Working with the franchise and not against it, submitting ideas and respecting the outcomes and working as a team’ says David who has a high understanding of the franchise business model. It is this knowledge and their commitment to planning and reaching goals that have seen the couple become our longest running franchisees and well respected amongst the Zarraffa’s Coffee group.
David and Lynn’s commitment to the business paid off again in 2009, when they were amongst the top 3 Franchisee’s in the running for Franchisee’s of the Year. This achievement is testament to their outstanding business acumen and high rating quarterly store evaluations.
ZARRAFFA’S COFFEE MIAMI AND WORONGARY Brendon and Debbie Blakemore
Returning to the workforce for any parent is a difficult decision to make. Deciding what to do is often even harder. This was the case for Miami and Worongary Franchisees Debbie and Brendon Blakemore. After realising that their lives incorporated the daily trip to the local coffee shops of the Gold Coast, Debbie and Brendon Blakemore decided that it would be a wise move to open one of their own. Their love of Zarraffa’s Coffee in particular made the initial decision quite simple. Following this decision they realised that the franchising system was straight forward and “easy to follow”, making their decision to join the family a fortunate one.
The pair’s first store was opened in November 2005 at the Miami One Shopping complex. With the opening of the store they found they did not face one of the critical issues seen when starting a new business - developing customer base. They attest this avoidance to the strength of the Zarraffa’s brand which gave them “an immediate level of business... and loyal customers” who they found would “drive out of their way for their favourite drink”.
In 2009, after witnessing the growth of their store at Miami and the growth of the company as a whole, they received the opportunity to open Zarraffa’s Coffee’s first Drive Thru store at Worongary. Located just of Exit 77 on the M1, the store has become the epitome of convenience and quality – two attributes Zarraffa’s Coffee strives to achieve. With the establishment just as new to the brand as it was to Debbie and Brendon, the planning, training and ongoing support from Zarraffa’s saw the store become one of the most successful in a few short months and the basis for a new era in the Zarraffa’s Coffee Group.
When asked to provide potential franchisees with advice they first advise to establish your own goals and then evaluate whether the Zarraffa’s Coffee system suits these goals by asking the people who live the brand, the existing franchisees. Sound advice from the franchisee’s who, in 2008 were awarded Zarraffa’s Coffee’s greatest accolades, Franchisee of the Year, an achievement they view as one of the highlights of their careers. With this achievement under their belt, the couple aim to work on building both their stores, working them toward their full potential.
ZARRAFFA’S COFFEE SURFERS PARADISE AND REDCLIFFE Brendon Lord and Judy Lord Brendon Lord first met Kenton Campbell when he came to open his first Australian bank account. Intrigued by Kenton’s business, Zarraffa’s Coffee, Brendon made the coffee transition to the brand becoming addicted immediately. After sharing the Zarraffa’s Coffee experience with his mother Judy and with the opportunity to purchase the existing Surfers Paradise store, Brendon and Judy jumped at the chance to enter the franchise system.
Purchasing an existing store meant that Brendon and Judy already had a loyal customer base to build on. Judy and Brendon believe that there business’ success is founded on the fact that Zarraffa’s Coffee is one of the biggest coffee brands on the Gold Coast and as the company moves into Brisbane, the brand is becoming more present.
In 2008, off the success of his Surfers Paradise store, Brendon and Judy decided to open a store in the sea side town of Redcliffe. With the perfect back drop of the ocean and the much cruisier pace compared to Surfers, Brendon and Judy.
In 2009 Judy and Brendon earned themselves a place amongst the top 3 Zarraffa’s Coffee Franchise’s vying for the title of Franchisee of the Year.
