Wok in a Box full steam ahead

Wok In A Box
A Wok in a Box franchise is a flash of colour and a crash of woks, with all the invigoration of chilli smoke.
Meeting the man behind the concept is a more measured experience. The chain was recently named SA’s emerging franchise at this year’s Pricewaterhouse-Coopers Excellence in Franchising Awards.
But while it has grown from its Norwood store to 34 stores across Australia and New Zealand in only five years, its managing director Adrian Morrissy is more modest about his success.
“Six months before we opened Norwood, we looked at a store in Glenelg,” he said. “Boost Juice got (the store) and now they have 100-plus stores, so compared to them, we have been pretty slow.”
Mr Morrissy spent three years as an accountant to develop his business and management skills, he said. While it wasn’t a matter of “biding his time,” there were certainly other things on his mind.
“We didn’t set out to be a franchise, it was to be one store,” he said. “I wanted things to be replicable.”
“As an accountant, I guess I understood the need for systems and procedures.”
