The Happiness Institute’s principles come from the father of positive psychology
At 67, Martin Seligman is the father of positive psychology and he is still energetically injecting his academic work into just about any arena of society. The basis of positive psychology is that too much emphasis is often placed on fixing what is flawed and not enough on what is right and how it can be fostered.
Rather than focus on mental dysfunction, positive psychology looks at what makes some people happier, more resilient and satisfied in their lives. It involves learning to think differently about good and bad events and learning to live the best and happiest life.
As well as taking positive psychology in education, health and neuroscience, Seligman has also recently worked with the American Army to introduce positive psychology into their ranks. This is with the hope of creating soldiers who are more resilient and who will be less vulnerable to suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Seligman presents a strong figure of knowledge and is a far cry from the pop psychology guru people may assume him to be. He speaks with seriousness and depth and can easily command the attention of an audience; an important attribute when addressing a room full of soldiers one would suggest. He has an authoritative voice, comes across as practical and his ideals are presented very rationally.
Seligman’s goal is to make the world happier, which is shared by Australian academic and positive psychology leader Professor Tim Sharp. Professor Tim Sharp is the founder of The Happiness Institute.
The Happiness Institute is also generating a national network of like minded and enthusiastic coaching professionals and instead of offering life coaching franchises or psychology franchises, The Happiness Institute has devised a licensing model. The model is essentially an agreement between The Happiness Institute and an individual, allowing them to use the intellectual property developed by the institute and leverage its respected brand to their business’ advantage.
Licensees have access to the following intellectual property:
- Course manuals
- Administrative paperwork
- Books
- CD’s
- Research literature
- Presence in various marketing mediums belonging to The Happiness Institute
- Professional development
