Dr Sharp's thoughts on happiness at work
Dr Tim Sharp, Chief Happiness Officer of The Happiness Institute , claims that there are many good reasons why happiness at work should be considered a priority by all involved, including both employers and employees.
Research clearly suggests, for example, that positive workplaces have:
- higher morale
- better engagement
- are more productive; and
- attract and retain the best people.
Dr Sharp suggests that to increase happiness at work, people must first find meaning or purpose in what they do. Even though they might not be able to change what they do, he says, they can change the way they think about what they do.
According to Dr Sharp, they also need to use their individual strengths as often, and in as many ways, as possible while at work to achieve optimum happiness on the job.
Additionally, Dr Sharp believes that focusing on the big picture, rather than the results of individual labours can have a positive result. In other words, appreciating the results of one’s team’s labours can result in more meaningful satisfaction on task completion.
By taking regular breaks, workers can pace themselves through their working day, week and year. Dr Sharp says that this will help improve efficiency, productivity and happiness. He also believes that setting medium and long term work and career goals can also potentially benefit these areas.
Another important thing he suggests to focus on is what is best, rather than what is worst in one’s job, about their organisation and their colleagues and clients.
Finally, Dr Sharp stresses the importance of being kind and considerate toward colleagues and clients, as well as having fun at work and sharing in humour and play, for overall happiness and enjoyment in the work place.
