The Better Business Group advise franchises to hire based on attitude rather than skills

The Better Business Group franchise consultants advise franchises to hire for attitude and train for skills, rather than hire based on specific skills the position requires on paper and take the chance that the person will fit into the franchise system.

Often applications can be disregarded because the person does not check all the boxes as far as the job description is concerned but many successful, profitable franchises have adopted this approach, looking for attitude and the right personality for the position. They accept that it only takes a little time and resources to train for the skills needed but an attitude can not be trained.

Franchise consultants at Better Business Group advises franchises to source people who;

  • Can get along with others,
  • Want to be there,
  • Have a burning desire to do a great job, and
  • Have values that match the franchises values

The Better Business Group advises that unless a franchise chooses to use a third party recruitment company, the key is to talk to potential staff before looking at their resume.

By giving a day and time slot for potentials to call and letting all calls go to message, the hiring party is able to sift out the non-serious prospects from those leaving their details.

After compiling a list of serious prospects, 4-5 questions based around attitude and enthusiasm should offer an insight into their attitude. While the answers are important, how the prospect speaks will reflect their attitude. Look for excitement, confidence and some passion and allocate a score out of 5.

It is important to snatch up prospects that appear to be everything the franchise needs in a franchisee or staff member to avoid the competition grabbing them. Follow up potential franchisees within 24 hours, setting appointments to discuss the franchise opportunity further.
