Sherpa Group explain the psyche and mentality needed to be a franchisor

by Sherpa Group

Sherpa Group offer the phrase ‘Blame no-one, Do something, Expect nothing’ to those considering expanding their business.

To be successful and ensure franchising is the right strategy for expansion, potential franchisors need to assess the psyche and mentality needed to expand their business.

Franchising is when a potential franchisor allows a franchisee to run a copy of their business if they agree to do the best to follow the businesses tested procedures, however the franchisee is required to drive the business with passion.

Franchisors are required to show potential franchisees what they need to do, give them the tools to do it, offer a support network, and exchange the opportunity to gain a return on investment for a fair priced brand, goodwill and support.

A successful franchisor is also a mentor and must possess great communication skills to liaise with staff and franchisees. A positive attitude is imperative and ‘conquers all’ in terms of franchisors inspiring franchisees and driving their franchise network.

Any leadership role needs a person who is motivated, driven, enthusiastic, and passionate about their role.

As franchisors are required to lead and influence others towards achieving a goal, the 3P’s is an effective model to follow and consists of Person, People and Purpose.

  • A Person committed to purpose that can excite a network of people to follow their business in a strategic way and out of a desire rather than obligation.
  • The Purpose to achieve. Franchising is a tool to motivate people to build and grow, something the Sherpa Group term ‘human agriculture’.
  • People to influence and a willingness to get hands dirty just the same as any other staff member or franchisee. A leader should lead from the front effectively and with respect. It is also important for a leader to have the ability to listen to constructive criticism, be open- minded to feedback and suggestions, have the ability to try new things (take risks) and not be afraid to make mistakes. Most importantly, an effective leader learns from the mistakes made.
Franchising is not a business itself but a way of doing business and by rethinking traditional methodology you can expand your business in an innovative and refreshing way.
