Our Core Purpose
‘yes’ Optus – About us
Since 1991, Optus has transformed the way Australians communicate with each other. Right from the beginning we’ve stood for choice. Our name was created from the Latin word for choose “optare” so the meaning behind Optus is ‘choose us’!
In 2001, SingTel became the parent company of Optus, paving the way for us to become a strong and strategic telecommunications player within the Asia-Pacific region. Optus has continued with the expansion of its 3G/HSPA mobile network, enhancing the quality and speed of mobile services across the country. Some major regional cities are now receiving Optus 3G services via the network. As of February 2012, Optus mobile subscriber base has exceeded 9.4 million and the Optus 3G subscriber base increased to 6.24 million.
Optus has also commenced the roll-out of Long Term Evolution (LTE) on the Optus Open Network and successfully connected Australia’s first LTE data call in the 700MHz “Digital Dividend” spectrum band on 1 November 2011. From April 2012, Optus will deliver its first LTE services to Newcastle, Port Stephens, the Hunter Valley and Lake Macquarie areas. A capital city roll-out will begin in the second half of 2012, with phase one to deliver LTE services in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, and phase two to other capital cities.
As at 31st December 2011, Optus had a total of 965,000 broadband subscribers, provisioned for services on our own DSL Direct Network. The total DLD Direct network build will include a total of 371 exchanges with a coverage footprint of approximately 2.9 million premises.
Optus continues to introduce innovative products. In 2011, Optus lead the market with differentiated digital services which provide customers with personalised applications and content. Following the introduction of Smart Safe, Optus TV Now and Go Places. Optus introduced another unique TV and Video application for the exclusive streaming of the Australian Open 2012.
