Subtle Wind Changes in Franchise Perceptions

The WA and SA inquiries into franchising are symptomatic of a broader wind change in franchising. Franchise systems need to be alive to the fact that public perceptions of franchising are no longer universally positive. Further; politicians, regulators, the media, the banking sector and the accountancy profession have more of a mixed view of franchising than has previously been the case.

As a result of the excellent work done by the Franchise Council of Australia it is unlikely that we will see any State based franchise legislation. Similarly the new Federal Government seems generally satisfied with the current regulatory framework. The impact for franchise systems is likely to be more subtle, notably in Deacons is Australia's leading franchise law firm, with offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Canberra and in 11 locations in Asia. We have assisted over 200 franchise companies, from large international corporations to start up franchisors. We do not handle franchisee matters. 03.03.2008
