Total Literacy International Pty Ltd represents products and services under the I Can Read® brand which are made available through I Can Read® total literacy learning centres. I Can Read® total literacy centres started in July 2002 after the creators of the I Can Read System were approached by an investor in Singapore who wanted to set up a learning centre. The creators of the I Can Read system are registered Australian educational psychologists. Prior to 1997, they were involved in conducting scientific research at the University of New England into how children learn to read. The research from global advancements into how the brain detects and responds to phonemes (indivisible spoken sound units) led these researchers to theorise that the main problem confronting students learning to read was how to use phonology to process sequentially and how to overcome the ambiguities that could arise when a sequence of letters did not correspond to predictable sound sequences.
