The Hudsons Coffee journey
The Hudsons Coffee journey began from a casual conversation after long time friends Ros Turner and Mark Hawthorne met to swap travel stories. "We were both looking for new opportunities and started talking about what we'd seen of the coffee house market overseas. We realized that Melbourne did not yet have coffee houses that served great coffee for people on the go" says Hawthorne.
The business partners set about capturing this market by providing a superior product in an efficient manner. They opened their first store in Elizabeth Street Melbourne in December 1998.
"By 2000, we had two stores opened but knew the big multinationals were ready to enter the market. (Starbucks were on the way and Gloria Jeans were looking to expand their Australian franchise, they currently had two test sites in NSW). We realized we needed to grow quickly to get our footprint on the ground," says the co-founder of Hudsons Coffee.
"We opened nine stores across three states with just three of us (including a property consultant) at head office. It was such a short period of time to do it in, but we had to get that presence ahead of the multinationals.
"Nine years on, Hudsons Coffee now has 38 stores across Australia, namely Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania. Operating in areas including central business districts, hospitals, airports, shopping centres and regional locations, Hudsons Coffee certainly has a solid business model and a great understanding of responsible growth.
Hudsons Coffee started franchising in 2003 after five years of trailing and testing the company-run stores to ensure a successful business model. From now on, says Hawthorne, franchising is "predominantly" the way to go and one of the most important aspects of our business.
"If you pick the right people, give them the right training and support, franchisees will always do a better job because it's their money and business. Our franchise group is as passionate about the brand as I am. Their success is vital to the company to ensure the success of our growing Australian brand," says Hawthorne.
