Who is Hog’s Breath Cafe?

Hog’s Breath Cafe has its origin in Airlie Beach, a small seaside town in North Queensland, Australia. In 1987 the founder of Hog’s Breath Cafe, Don Algie, sailed into Airlie Beach in the majestic Whitsunday Islands looking for a location to start a unique style of restaurant. Armed with a passion for American style service and facilities he eventually found a house on the beach that was modified to a licensed restaurant.

From day one, Hog’s Breath Cafe set out to be unlike any other restaurant. In a nutshell, it is about providing quality food and beverage in a casual environment with an over-riding friendly, party atmosphere. The diverse menu is centred around the Prime Rib, an unbelievably tender steak that just melts in your mouth.

Hog’s Breath Cafe is an Australian home-grown franchise system that has expanded from one outlet to sixty-eight locations to date (including three in New Zealand), in just eighteen years. It is currently one of the largest fully licensed theme restaurant chains in Australia and can be truly described as an Australian success story. This success is now headed for New Zealand, with additional locations planned over the next few years.

Hog’s Breath Cafe is currently operated from the corporate offices in Cleveland, Queensland, a larger corporate facility that incorporates an operating restaurant, training facilities and corporate offices. The corporate offices provide support in all areas of the business from Graphic Design & Marketing, Financial Control, Food Services, Operations & Training and Store Development.

Hog’s Breath Cafe is represented in all state and territories in Australia and New Zealand. The company has a current expansion program for 4 new restaurants annually throughout Australia & New Zealand. Hog’s Breath Cafe is incorporated in the state of Queensland and is privately owned. What is Hog’s Breath Cafe?

Hog’s Breath Cafe is a Licensed Restaurant business which incorporates a bar servery area and operating restaurant. The system is based on the successful marketing strategies of similar style restaurants in the United States. The style of dining is referred to as “Casual Dining”. It is a unique style of restaurant aimed at providing guests with moderately priced food and drinks, in a warm, old style atmosphere. Guests are treated to a fun casual dining experience highlighted by friendly staff, old collectibles and relaxing natural timber fittings. The formula has proven successful through current locations in New Zealand and Australia under the management of the Hog’s Breath Franchise System.

The exterior and interior of each location will have similar design resemblance regulated by design rules set down by the company. Each location may differ slightly depending on the final building and site approved and certain Local Council requirements, however, the overall concept and design will be the same.

Each location must employ a Kitchen Manager (not necessarily a qualified chef). Each kitchen will be fitted with the same basic appliances with recommendations of brand and model. The house specialty of Prime Rib of Beef is cooked in a special oven, which is specified by the company. Each location will feature the same menu and liquor list along with the same pricing structure. The selection of food served will reflect simplicity with quality.

Restaurant furniture and seating is to be made from the same source using the design as supplied from the company. The only variation to this is for the free standing tables and chairs when approved by the company.

Each location is equipped with a multi-media audio visual setup which provides entertainment based around the music and film clips of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s, blended with sport related videos and images. Live music performances are not essential and are not encouraged. However, themed entertainment such as Sunday afternoon Jazz may form part of the overall light entertainment. One man and two man light entertainment may be used with the approval of the company. All necessary permits must be in place, including rights for playing audio and video.
