What it takes to run a successful franchise
Do you have what it takes to run a franchised business? What is the magic secret to owning and operating a successful franchise? What does the perfect business owner look like?
Questions, questions, and more questions! However, each is critical to your franchise journey. Indeed, it is these questions that have made me reflect on my own journey.
Consider the following questions and deliberations, be honest with yourself, and make notes or discuss your answers with your nearest and dearest.
Once you have completed the questions, ask someone close to you to answer the questions on your behalf. Do they have the same responses as you? What answers were similar? What answers were different and why?
1. Why do you want to be a franchisee?
Successful franchisees have a clear vision right from the beginning – they truly understand and articulate their motivation and interest in being a franchisee, and have a clear understanding of what they hope to achieve. This is the first stepping-stone in their franchise journey.
2. Due diligence
Once you have figured out why you want to be a franchisee, you need to consider what kind of franchise will allow you to achieve that. Undoubtedly, you have already thought about the type of franchise you want to get into. So, consideration number two is all about due diligence.
What does due diligence mean? It means that you will undertake research and seek information to help you make the right decision.
You owe it to yourself and to your family to be meticulous and careful in finding out as much as you possibly can before entering into a franchise arrangement. Successful franchisees tend to go into a franchise with eyes wide open and armed with the information they have gathered – the more information, the better.
3. On being a franchisee
Once you’ve done your research, consider what life will be like and what kind of franchisee you will be. What does this mean? Successful franchisees have some qualities in common.
4. Business management
Part of being a Franchisee is the ability to manage your business. This includes the structures, plans and goals you have for your business – from budgeting and financial management through to marketing and advertising. All of these tasks are critical to business success and need to be planned for and acted upon.
Do you know where you are headed? How do you know if you have gotten there? An old chestnut, but a good one is the saying ‘if you fail to plan, you plan to fail’
6. Business development
Lastly, successful franchisees balance managing and operating their business with a focus on growing their business through business development. Business development includes the tasks that allow you to grow and increase your business.
