It is not often that TAFE students get a chance to hang out with managing directors and founder franchisors but that is just what student Jacinta Price did recently.

As one of four lucky students, Jacinta Price recently participated n the Taste of Franchising Program, an initiative of Glenn Parker, teacher in the Hospitality and Business Management Program of the Melbourne-based William Angliss Institute and Dean Salomone, managing director of Franchise Careers franchise consultants, a specialist recruitment company. The two have joined forces to help educate students about the fast growing franchise industry.

In particular, it gives emerging new entrepreneurs and business students a unique insight into opportunities in the franchise sector and reveals the possibility of an exciting career.

Parker's specialist subject is franchising, something he not only lectures on but also has first hand experience of, previously owning and operating a franchise.

Salomone, the vice president of the Victorian Chapter Committee of the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA), explains the purpose of the program.

"As a business we do quite a bit of executive recruitment in the franchise sector and that's working with franchisors, fielding some of their key strategic personnel positions. Over the last two years we have noticed an inequality in relation to multi generational employment at franchisor level.

"Fresh ideas often come from the youth, yet most franchisors are requesting that their personnel have mufti-site management background or between five and 10 years of experience in franchising.

'We see this program as an opportunity for franchisors to see what the youth of today are really like and perhaps dispel some myths of the Gen Ys and their lack of motivation and drive."

Jacinta Price reports an outstanding program for Price was the opportunity to attend a teleconference with founder and managing director Katherine Sampson, and spend valuable time with management personnel.

As a result of the program which gaveher exposure to the operations, marketing, property, leasing and personnel side of the franchise, Price believes she is now better informed about the career roles within Healthy Habits' head office.

Price has now completed her two year Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management and really does have a taste for franchising. She is looking forward to working full time in the franchise sector.

Lecturer Glenn Parker adds "I am thrilled that Jacinta has had such a positive experience and have no doubt that it has provided her with a unique insight into the franchising industry. It is an experience that I would love to see all students involved in franchising be able to have access to."

Katherine Sampson echoes the sentiments.

"It was an absolute pleasure having Jacinta experience life at Healthy Habits with our team. It was also nice to know that Jacinta selected the Healthy Habits franchise system in which to learn the industry.

"Jacinta was keen to spend time with all our department heads, so that she could get a taste of franchising from all aspects of the business. She was also fortunate enough to sit in on a round table forum being conducted by a group of franchise experts, who discussed the issues facing the industry in 2008.

"I completely support a franchising program being developed for students, as I know that entering the franchising industry will become a career of choice in the future and not something one falls in to. "I look forward to having our next William Angliss student join us in the near future".

Three other students participated in the program's pilot and were also exposed to head office operations at 7-Eleven and Nando's.

William Angliss Institute's brightest students were selected to be part of the pilot and due to its success, significant interest is now being expressed by other franchisors wanting to be involved.
